Business Email Compromise

Fraud Awareness & Education

Business Email Compromise (BEC) is a sophisticated scam targeting businesses that regularly perform wire transfer payments. One of the greatest challenges associated with BEC is that it covers a range of inter-related and rapidly-evolving scams, but all BEC attacks have two common components:

  1. The fraudster sends a fake or edited email request to the victim; and
  2. The victim then sends money to an unintended beneficiary.

As all BEC attacks involve funds being sent to an unintended recipient, the key to combating this type of scam is to build robust controls around the beneficiary change.
